Brick is one of the oldest and most enduring building materials in human history. Fired clay blocks have been found in construction sites dating back six thousand years. They have built cathedrals and fortresses, universities and factories, the great urban residential neighborhoods of Victorian England and the mill towns of industrial America. Through all of this history, the fundamental technology remained relatively stable: clay, pressed or hand-formed, fired in a kiln, laid in mortar.
What has changed dramatically, particularly in the past few decades, is the precision with which bricks can be manufactured, the range of textures and finishes that can be achieved, and the sophistication with which these capabilities have been brought into contemporary home design. The result is a material that feels simultaneously ancient and thoroughly current, and that is finding new applications in residential interiors and exteriors that earlier generations of architects and homeowners would not have anticipated.
The Spectrum of Brick Textures
Texture is among the most expressive qualities of brick, and the range of what is achievable has expanded considerably through both machine refinement and deliberate replication of historic techniques.
Smooth-faced bricks occupy one end of the spectrum. The surfaces of these bricks are refined and close-grained, the product of careful clay preparation and controlled pressing. They capture and reflect light in ways that rough bricks do not, creating surfaces that read as clean, contemporary, and architectural. In interior applications, smooth brick achieves a certain refinement that makes it work in design contexts, from modernist to transitional, where a rustic brick would feel out of place. In exterior applications, smooth brick reads as deliberate and precise, a material choice that signals design intention rather than simply structural necessity.
Wire-cut surfaces occupy the middle of the texture spectrum and are the most common finish in contemporary brick production. In wire-cut manufacturing, a column of extruded clay is sliced by taut wires, leaving a surface texture that reveals the internal grain of the clay body. The result is a lively, varied surface with subtle linear marks and natural color variation that comes from the mineral composition of the clay mix. Wire-cut bricks have an honesty about them, you can see something of how they were made, that many designers find appealing.
Handmade and hand-formed textures represent the most expressive end of the brick surface spectrum. These bricks, whether genuinely made by hand or produced through manufacturing processes that deliberately replicate hand-making marks, carry a character of individual attention and craft that machine-produced bricks struggle to achieve. The slight variations in dimension, the thumb marks and surface irregularities, the particular quality of light on an undulating rather than planar surface: these qualities bring a warmth and humanity to brick construction that is genuinely irreplaceable.
Weathered and reclaimed textures, in which genuine age or deliberate processes replicate the character of old bricks, bring historical resonance to new construction. The appeal is not nostalgia alone. Old bricks have a richness that comes from the firing methods and clay compositions of their era, often with colors and surface qualities that contemporary production cannot fully replicate. Genuine reclaimed brick from demolished buildings carries that history in its material, while reproduction weathered brick captures the aesthetic without the sourcing complexity and dimensional variability that genuine reclaimed material involves.
Color: From the Classic Reds to the Contemporary Palette
The color of brick has always been determined primarily by the mineral composition of the clay from which it is made and the temperature and atmosphere of the kiln in which it is fired. Iron content produces the red tones most closely associated with traditional brick. Lower iron content, or reduction firing that limits oxygen during the firing process, produces buff, cream, and gray tones. Additions of manganese, chromium, and other minerals can shift the color further.
Contemporary brick manufacturing has expanded the achievable color palette considerably through better control of firing atmospheres, blending of clay bodies from different sources, and surface treatments that alter the fired color. The palette now runs from the palest cream through warm buff, classic red, deep burgundy, cool gray, near-black, and nuanced in-between tones that read differently in different light conditions.
The most interesting brick colors are rarely uniform. The best bricks have variation within each individual unit, color that shifts subtly across the face of a single brick, and variation between units within a batch that creates the visual liveliness of a wall that looks different from across a room than it does from close up. This natural variation, which mass production technology has learned to control and replicate rather than eliminate, is one of brick’s most important aesthetic qualities.
Color selection in brick should account for the conditions under which the brick will be seen. Exterior brick reads very differently in the bright midday sun of a southern climate than in the overcast diffuse light of a northern one. Interior brick used for a fireplace surround or accent wall will read differently in morning light, artificial light, and candlelight. Looking at large samples in the actual light conditions of the intended installation is essential before committing to any specification.
Interior Applications: Brick Finds New Contexts
Brick in residential interiors has moved well beyond the fireplace surround that has always been its natural home. Contemporary interior design has embraced exposed brick across a remarkable range of applications and aesthetics, from the industrial-chic exposed brick walls that define urban loft living to the carefully designed brick accent walls that bring material warmth to otherwise minimal rooms.
The fireplace remains the single most powerful application of interior brick. A fireplace surround in well-chosen, beautifully detailed brick anchors a room in a way that no other material quite manages. The combination of the material’s warmth, its resonance with fire and shelter as fundamental human experiences, and the visual interest of its texture makes a brick fireplace genuinely compelling. In contemporary rooms, a fireplace surround in smooth pale brick or a refined stack-bond pattern achieves a very different effect than a traditional herringbone-pattern hearth in hand-formed red brick, but both are unmistakably good.
Kitchen applications have become particularly exciting. A brick backsplash in a white subway brick or in a handmade cream brick brings texture and warmth to what is often the most intensely designed room in the house. Brick is heat-resistant, easy to maintain, and develops character over time in the way that tile and painted surfaces do not. In kitchens with a culinary, European, or farmhouse orientation, brick reads as authentic and considered rather than decorative.
Accent walls in living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices use brick to introduce texture and material depth into rooms where flat painted surfaces dominate. The thermal mass of a full-thickness brick wall can also contribute to temperature stability in climates where that is desirable, though most interior accent walls use thin brick veneer rather than full-thickness masonry. Quality thin brick veneer, produced from actual fired clay with irregular edges and natural surface variation, reads convincingly as full-thickness brick and is far more practical for interior installation. But its aesthetic qualities are equally important in good exterior design, and the choices made in brick selection, coursing pattern, and mortar joint treatment make the difference between a building that is merely solid and one that is genuinely beautiful.
The facade of a brick home reads very differently depending on which brick is used. A home clad in pale buff brick with a weathered, handmade texture reads as warm, welcoming, and connected to craft tradition. The same home in a smooth dark charcoal brick with thin, recessed mortar joints reads as austere, contemporary, and architecturally precise. Neither reading is superior in the abstract: both are appropriate in the right architectural context with the right surrounding landscape and neighborhood character. The selection must be considered in context.
Coursing patterns, the arrangement of bricks in horizontal courses and the bond pattern that ties them together, have expressive potential that is often overlooked in routine construction. Running bond, the most common pattern with each brick offset by half its length from the course above and below, is the standard because it provides excellent structural performance and straightforward installation. Stack bond, in which bricks align vertically in addition to horizontally, creates a more graphic, contemporary pattern at some cost to structural efficiency. Flemish bond and English bond, in which headers and stretchers alternate in defined rhythms, carry the character of historic masonry and work beautifully in traditional architectural contexts.
The mortar joint treatment is perhaps the most underappreciated design decision in brickwork. The mortar joint is approximately twenty percent of the visible surface of a brick wall, and its color and profile significantly affect how the overall wall reads. A raked joint creates strong horizontal shadow lines that emphasize the coursing rhythm. A tooled concave joint reads as neat and traditional. A struck joint, recessed on one side, creates a more dynamic light-and-shadow pattern. Matching mortar color closely to the brick produces a more unified surface effect; contrasting mortar emphasizes the individual bricks and the pattern they form.
Design Innovation at the Intersection of Tradition and Technology
The most interesting developments in contemporary brick design are happening at the intersection of traditional craft knowledge and modern manufacturing capability. Brick manufacturers who understand both the material’s history and the possibilities of current production technology are producing work that would have been impossible even a generation ago.
Customization has become genuinely accessible. Brick manufacturers can now produce bespoke colors, surface textures, and profile shapes in quantities appropriate for residential projects rather than only the large commercial commissions that once justified the setup costs of custom production. An architect designing a contemporary house can specify a brick color that is precisely calibrated to the natural stone of the site, or a profile that echoes a specific historical reference, with manufacturing precision that hand production could never achieve.
Digital fabrication has opened possibilities in brick pattern-making that skilled masons would previously have found impractical. Complex three-dimensional brick installations, in which bricks project at varying depths to create sculptural relief patterns on facades, can now be designed in modeling software and translated into installation drawings that guide the mason’s work with precision. The computational design community has been particularly active in exploring what is possible when the discipline of masonry is approached with digital tools that can manage the complexity of large-scale pattern design.
The combination of ancient material and contemporary design intention produces work that is at once deeply familiar and entirely new. Brick has always been a material of civilizations. Its current moment in high design is simply the latest chapter in a very long story, and the material, as it always has, brings something genuinely irreplaceable to the spaces it shapes.
