Building a deck from the ground up is one of those projects that looks simple on paper and reveals its complexity in layers. Step Two: Excavate and Set Your Footings

Beams run perpendicular to the house and are supported by the posts. Joists span between the ledger board and the outer beam and provide the surface your decking boards will fasten to. Joist spacing is typically 16 inches on center for standard lumber decking, though composite products sometimes require tighter spacing. Always verify spacing requirements with the manufacturer specifications for your specific material before you frame.

Use exterior-rated structural screws and joist hanger hardware throughout. Hardware that is not rated for outdoor exposure corrodes quickly, particularly in humid climates, and corroded connectors compromise structural integrity silently over time. The cost difference between standard and exterior-rated hardware is negligible compared to the labor cost of replacing it after the fact.

Step Four: Lay the Decking

Decking materials span a wide range of price points, durability levels, and maintenance requirements. Pressure-treated lumber is the most affordable option and performs well, but it requires periodic sealing or staining to maintain its appearance and resist deterioration. Cedar and redwood are naturally rot-resistant and beautiful but come at a higher price. Tropical hardwoods like ipe or cumaru are exceptionally durable and dense but require specific fastening techniques and specialized tools. Composite decking costs more upfront and installs somewhat differently but needs very little ongoing maintenance over its lifespan.

Whatever material you choose, install boards perpendicular to the joists and leave a consistent gap between each one for drainage and thermal expansion. In humid climates, freshly pressure-treated lumber often shrinks slightly as it dries, so boards installed tight may gap more than intended once seasoned. Using a consistent spacer from the start prevents an irregular appearance once the wood settles.

Step Five: Build the Railings

Railings are required by code on any deck surface more than 30 inches above grade, and the specifics vary by jurisdiction. Most codes require railings at least 36 to 42 inches high with balusters spaced no more than 4 inches apart to prevent children from slipping through. Verify the requirements in your local building code before you design or purchase materials.

Railing options range from basic pressure-treated wood to cable rail systems, aluminum balusters, glass panels, and composite products. Your railing choice has an outsized effect on the finished look of the entire deck, so spend real time on this decision. A simple deck with well-chosen railings can look intentional and polished. A beautiful deck with cheap or mismatched railings can undermine the whole project visually.

Step Six: Stairs, Lighting, and the Finishing Details

Stairs connect the deck to the yard and are among the most inspected elements of any deck build. They need to meet the same code requirements as interior stairs, including consistent rise and run dimensions across every step.
